Mumbai Monsoon Arrival Triggers Waterlogging and Transport Disruptions; No Official Order on Closure of Schools and Colleges
Mumbai witnessed the arrival of the southwest monsoon on Tuesday, 13 days later than usual, offering relief from heat but triggering heavy overnight rainfall on Wednesday that caused widespread waterlogging and transport disruptions. Despite an IMD red alert, BMC has issued no closure order for schools and colleges, leaving institutions to decide locally as conditions evolve.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai in view of the intense rainfall activity. Despite the alert, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not issued any directive ordering the closure of schools, colleges, or other educational institutions. In the absence of an official order, educational institutions are expected to function as per their regular schedules, while individual schools and colleges retain the discretion to take decisions based on local conditions and safety considerations.
The heavy downpour resulted in waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Mumbai, leading to severe traffic congestion and delays across key road networks. The city’s transport system was also impacted, with commuters reporting disruptions to local train services in certain sections due to persistent rainfall.
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall activity over Mumbai and adjoining regions, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. Students, parents, and educational institutions have been advised to closely monitor official communications from the BMC, district administration, and school authorities for any updates regarding potential closures or schedule changes. Any suspension of academic activities due to adverse weather conditions is expected to be communicated strictly through official channels.
As of now, no city-wide order has been issued mandating the closure of educational institutions. The situation remains fluid, with further developments expected if rainfall intensity increases or if authorities issue revised directives.
The ongoing weather conditions underscore the city’s vulnerability to intense monsoon activity, with administrative agencies remaining engaged in continuous monitoring to manage potential disruptions.
